High Doses of Ascorbate (Vitamin C): A New Frontier in the Treatment of Intraocular Cancer
نویسنده
چکیده
Until the late eighties, the only treatment available for uveal melanoma was enucleation of the affected eye, though brachytherapy, thermotherapy and radiation therapy can be used to treat small/medium size tumours with preservation of the eye [16]. Several different chemotherapeutic agents have been used, such as Dacarbazine, alone or in combination with Interferonalpha 2b, after primary treatment, to patients at high risk of developing metastatic disease, but they have not improved the outcome of these patients [17,18].

Pharmacokinetics of vitamin C: insights into the oral and intravenous administration of ascorbate.
There is a strong advocacy movement for large doses of vitamin C. Some authors argue that the biological half-life for vitamin C at high plasma levels is about 30 minutes, but these reports are the subject of some controversy. NIH researchers established the current RDA based upon tests conducted 12 hours (24 half lives) after consumption. The dynamic flow model refutes the current low-dose rec...

Background: Ascorbic acid, known as vitamin C, has been used in combination with a number of cytotoxic agents in vitro and in vivo with contradictory results on its effectiveness. It is believed that vitamin C can sensitize different cancer cells to common therapy strategies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During current research, the combination effect of vitamin C with cisplatin was ev...

Purpose. To test whether plasma vitamin C levels, following oral doses in supplemented volunteers, are tightly controlled and subject to a maximum in the region of 220mM L, as suggested by previous researchers for depleted subjects. To determine plasma levels following single, variable-sized doses of standard and liposomal formulations of vitamin C and compare the effects of the different formu...

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, ascorbate) is a basic compound that is of great importance with its role in various enzymatic reactions including the synthesis of collagen, as well as with its redox functions. Vitamin C has become the center of interest in cancer studies, in consequence of the facts that connective tissue changes and vitamin C deficiency were first alleged to be associated with cance...

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, ascorbate) has a controversial history in cancer treatment. Emerging evidence indicates that ascorbate in cancer treatment deserves re-examination. As research results concerning ascorbate pharmacokinetics and its mechanisms of action against tumor cells have been published, and as evidence from case studies has continued to mount that ascorbate therapy could be effect...
